Ex 115/End of the holiday
Message de here4u posté le 29-08-2017 à 16:39:14 (S | E | F)
Hello, dearest Friends, hardworkers and Lovers of English,

I)Translate into English:
» « Tu l'as échappé belle ! »
Maxwell!

II) Translate into French: (a sequel to the preceding text…)
The best was when I got home though and my dad came in. He’d sit in the big chair in front of the telly and I’d fetch him a beer, then I’d sit on the floor right next to him. He’d call me his best mate and twist my pony-tail round his finger until it pulled tight and I said « ow ! ». I‘d get mad at him when he did that, but it wouldn’t last. We were comfortable together, my dad and me. We almost never had rows.
Well, I suppose I thought it would always go on like that. I don’t remember thinking about the future at all. And then, one Christmas, he went to the annual knees-up at the Brewery. I was still up watching telly when he got back but he didn’t seem to notice me much. He was kind of extra cheery and kept slapping his hands against his thighs. I thought he’d just had too much to drink so I left him to it.
Andrea Lascelles, Best Mate, 1991.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms you fancy), 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words, (you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, scratch your minds and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE:?
(You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively!)
FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :
(to) RING – (to) DELETE – MOUSE – OINTMENT – AMAZED – MESSY – SO AS TO – AS IF + un emploi de WHOSE.

IV) Student in Danger! SOS, student in need… is Number one on another thread of the site (« Help ! and Rack your brains 4 ». Please, RUSH to help my poor Student… He needs it.

Hello everyone, hello here4u !!
Thanks for this hard and mind-stretching exercise, I had a lot of fun doing it though.
I wish you a good week

READY FOR CORRECTION !

I)Translate into English:
Do not waste your precious time with those people who are not sure to want what you have got to offer them.

Allez, amuse-toi ! »
« You have spent your entire life worrying about what people think.. Do not take care of it, live a bit ! » « Are you giving me the right to live my life ?! » « You don't need my permission, nor do you need anyone's ! Come on, have fun ! »

« Are you drifting in the corridors frightening the paintings that you haphazardly meet, or are you of any use in that society ? » « I have been summoned in the big office, like all of you ! »

« If I think this is dapper ? I do, but not only. I dislike the way the rooms are set up one behind another, and the inside decoration indicates a flaw of taste.»

» « Tu l'as échappé belle ! »
« He had himself caught red-handed. What about you ? » « I haven't, I managed not to be arrested» «It was close! » That one was sooooo DIFFICULT !!!

II) Translate into French: (a sequel to the preceding text…)

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
(to) RING – (to) DELETE – MOUSE – OINTMENT – AMAZED – MESSY – SO AS TO – AS IF + un emploi de WHOSE .
They were AMAZED about how easily she had broke into the MESSY room AS IF it were child's play ; she had to DELETE every data on a computer, WHOSE owner was in the bathroom -SO AS TO soothe a MOUSE bit with an OINTMENT- but her phone RANG loudly... (49 words)

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS
WHOSE phone RANG two minutes ago SO AS TO irritate my AMAZED cat AS IF he had seen a MOUSE while I was DELETING an email from my MESSY box, which resulted in splashing the pot of OINTMENT all over my desk? ...42 words
Thank you! Sorry not to do the other exercises but I am short of time.

Hi Here4U,

I – Into English
1 – Don’t waste your precious time with people who are not sure they want what you can give them
2 – You spent your whole life caring about what people think.. Don’t consider that too closely, do live ! You mean you allow me to live my own life ? You don’t need my permission or anyone’s else ! Come on, enjoy !
3 – Are you wandering through the corridors to frighten fortuitously the staff you meet or are you of any use in that Company ? ‘I’ve been summoned in the big office just like you all’
4 – Do I find it showy ? , Sure, I do. But not only. I don’t like those series of linked rooms on the ground floor and the interior decoration looks tasteless
5 – He was taken red-handed. What about you ? No I didn’t, I slipped through the net. But it was a close shave !

II – Into French
The best was when I got home though and my dad came in. He’d sit in the big chair in front of the telly and I’d fetch him a beer, then I ‘d sit on the floor right next to him. He’d call me his best mate and twist my pony-tail round his finger until it pulled tight and I said ‘wow’. I’d get mad at him when he did that, but it wouldn’t last. He was kind of extra cheery and kept slapping his hands against his tights. I thought he’d just had too much to drink so I left him do it.

III – Playing with words
In the MESSY room the cat jumped on the MOUSE on the computer keyboard AS IF it were a toy, DELETING a document and knocking down a jar of OINTMENT ; the AMAZED woman WHOSE hands were soapy, shouted SO AS to kick them out as the phone RANG (47)

I send that quickly because I will be without any computer nearly a fortnight. I hope I've not worked too quickly and there are not too many mistakes !

He was caught red handed What about you? No , I didn’t fall through the cracks it was a narrow shave.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS NOT AT ALL EASY
SO AS TO go shopping, I was writing my list, and gradually I DELETED what was not absolutely necessary when someone RANG 22 ; I was AMAZED seeing my little neighbor costumed in MOUSE, her MESSY brown hair, a white OINTMENT on her face, she was dressed AS IF Carnival WHOSE suit was referring to, was happening today ; hi MICKEY, I said ., Carnival is tomorrow.! 41....63

Thank you again, READY TO BE CORRECTED

Hello Here4u and all my friends , here is my work OK FOR CORRECTION.

I)Translate into English:
Do not waste your precious time with people who are not sure to want what to have to offer them.

Allez, amuse-toi ! »
you spend your whole life worrying about what people think? Do not pay too much attention, live life a little! "You give me the right to live my life?" "You don't need my authorization, that of anyone either !Come on, have fun"!

Do you wander through the corridors scaring the executives you meet at random, or do you really have anything to do with this company? "I was summoned to the big office, like all of you! "

If I find it flashy? Yes, but not only. I don't like the arrangement of the rooms in the row on the ground floor and the interior decoration denotes a lack of taste.

» « Tu l'as échappé belle ! »
He has been taken his hand in the bag. And you ? "No, I has been slipped through the net. "You had a few close calls!" "

The best was when I got home though and my dad came in. He'd sit in the big chair in front of the telly and I'd fetch him a beer, then I'd sit on the floor right next to him. He'd call me his best mate and twist my pony-tail round his finger until it pulled tight and I said « ow ! ». I?d get mad at him when he did that, but it wouldn't last. We were comfortable together, my dad and me. We almost never had rows.
Well, I suppose I thought it would always go on like that. I don't remember thinking about the future at all. And then, one Christmas, he went to the annual knees-up at the Brewery. I was still up watching telly when he got back but he didn't seem to notice me much. He was kind of extra cheery and kept slapping his hands against his thighs. I thought he'd just had too much to drink so I left him to it.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
(to) RING ? (to) DELETE ? MOUSE ? OINMENT ? AMAZED ? MESSY ? SO AS TO ? AS IF un emploi de WHOSE.
so as to heal my wife's skin disease I was preparing in my office an ointment, whose ingrédients were expensive and hard to find them ,when my wife rang me as if the sky were falling on her head ; she had seen a mouse running in our messy kitchen ; I was so amazed to hear what she said that I deleted all the datas from my computer.....65 words.

Dear Here4u, thank you very much for your new interesting test

Hello Here4U
FINISHED
Sorry to be late and thanks a lot for this exercise
Here's my try :

I)Translate into English:
Don't waste your precious time with people who might not want what you have to offer them.

Allez, amuse-toi ! »
"You've spent all your life caring about what people think... Don't pay too much attention to that, live at last!" "Are you allowing me to live my life?!" "You don't need my permission, nor do you need anyone's approval! Come on, enjoy yourself!

Are you wandering the corridors, frightening the managers you happen to meet, or are you really good for anything in this company?" "I've been called in the office like all of you!"

Do I find it showy ? Sure, but not only. The series of linked rooms laid out on the ground floor displeases me and the interior design denotes a lack of taste.

» « Tu l'as échappé belle ! »
"He's been caught with his hands in the cookie jar. How about you ?" "Nope. I've slipped through the cracks." "You've had a close shave!"

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
AS IF can to do all this WHOSE he want, SO AS TO achieve its purpose.
But, AMAZED by so much computer evolution, by this new MOUSE that automatically organizes all files if they are MESSY.
Make it RING, this new generation and DELETE the old one.

I hope I have made some progress. In the meantime, I thank you for this exercise that I am passionate about.
I would only say one thing. THANK YOU !!!!

I pass the ointment MDR !!!! I'm sorry, I just realized I forgot the word -> "ointment"

Hello Dear Friends !
Hello Boubouille !

My most sincere Congrats!

I)Translate into English:
Do not waste your precious time on people who aren’t sure if they want what you have to offer them.
- perdre du temps avec = waste time on => a waste of time
Aucune « difficulté » pour vous dans cette phrase. J’avais préféré commencer doucement.

Allez, amuse-toi ! »
« You’ve spent your whole life worrying about what people are thinking. Shrug it off, live a little…» «Are you giving me your permission to live my life?» (embarrassed laughs) «You don’t need it or anybody else’s; go (and) be happy!»
- (Ne pas) prêter attention = to care about = se soucier de ; Attention ! Ne pas mélanger avec : to take care of= prendre soin de ; to care for someone= « bien aimer », avoir un faible pour.
- Te soucier de ce que les gens pensent = "qu’en-dira-t-on ?" = rumour/ gossip/ what people think/wagging tongues/ graveyard buzz/ To worry about gossip= se soucier des commérages = un peu plus fort ; to care about peer pressure/ take... into account = un peu plus formel.
- Amuse-toi= go and be happy/ go be happy (US)/ Enjoy/

Are you roaming the hallways, randomly scaring executives, or do you actually serve a purpose around here? I was summoned to the big office as we all are!
- errer et rencontrer au hasard = roam randomly
- les couloirs = the hallways/ the corridors/
- « faire peur à » = to frighter/ to scare.
- servir à quelque chose= serve a purpose/ useful to=> be useless/ good for nothing …
- ATTENTION! )
- être convoqué = fort = to be summoned to

Do I find it flashy/ bling/ gawdy ? Yes, I do, but not only that … I don’t like the layout of the ground floor rooms in a row, and the decoration is the proof of a lack of taste.
- tape à l’œil= gaudy/attention-getting/ bling/ eye-catching/ flashy/ garish/- gee whiz/ glitzy / raffish/ razzle-dazzle/ razzmatazz/sharp/ showy/ splashy/ ostentatious
"flashy" is indeed a good fit here (possibly "fancy" for North American use -- "flashy" probably being a little more common in British English).
= extract from a Forum.

» « Tu l'as échappé belle ! »
He was caught red-handed. Were you? « No, I wasn’t! I fell through the cracks! » « That was a narrow escape! »
- se faire prendre la main dans le sac= caught red-handed/ with his hands in the cookie jar/ catch in the act/ ATTENTION ! CATCH, CAUGHT, CAUGHT.
- passer à travers les mailles du filet= slip through the net / fall through the cracks
- en enfilade= in a row/ a series of / adjoining rooms/connecting rooms/
- l’échapper belle = have a lucky escape/ have a close shave/ escape by the skin of one’s teeth/close shave/ have a narrow escape/be a close call/close call

II) Translate into French : (a sequel to the preceding text…)

(1) « the best » est, bien sûr, la forme superlative de « good => better … than => the best = le meilleur.
=> IMPARFAIT.
(3) «sit in the big chair »; ON a chair= sur une chaise ; IN a chair indique qu’il s’agit d’un fauteuil, qui se trouve être grand, imposant.
- « the floor right next to him » : right, ici, ne signifiait pas « à droite », mais « juste » = juste à côté de lui.
(5) he went to the annual knees-up at the Brewery."= / il est allé,/ comme tous les ans, au bal de l'usine/ au bal populaire annuel à l’usine.
Attention!

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
(to) RING – (to) DELETE – MOUSE – OINMENT – AMAZED – MESSY – SO AS TO – AS IF + un emploi de WHOSE.

- They were AMAZED about how easily she had brokeN into the MESSY room AS IF it were A child's (play ; she had to DELETE every data on a computer, WHOSE owner was in the bathroom -SO AS TO soothe a MOUSE bit with an OINTMENT ??? - but her phone RANG loudly... (49 words)

- WHOSE phone RANG two minutes ago SO AS TO irritate my AMAZED cat AS IF he had seen a MOUSE while I was DELETING an email from my MESSY box, which resulted in splashing the pot of OINTMENT all over my desk? ...42

- In the MESSY room the cat jumped on the MOUSE on the computer keyboard AS IF it were a toy, DELETING a document and knocking down a jar of OINTMENT ; the AMAZED woman WHOSE hands were soapy, shouted SO AS to kick them out as the phone RANG (47)

- There is one small fly in the OINTMENT : it looks AS IF your MESSY brother, WHOSE reputation is not overrated, has DELETED your files "while shaking your MOUSE quickly SO AS TO make it work better", or so he said : I'm AMAZED at your still RINGING him for help... (50)

- When she looks in her MESSY room, the OINTMENT she uses for the wrinkles she wants to DELETE from her forehead, SO AS TO appear AS IF she were ten years younger, Ana had been AMAZED by finding a little MOUSE among the RINGS of all kinds (WHOSE she collected.

-SO AS TO go shopping, I was writing my list, and (gradually I DELETED = ordre des mots) what was not absolutely necessary when someone RANG 22 ; I was AMAZED seeing my (little = young) neighbor costumed in MOUSE, XXXX (her) MESSY brown hair, a white OINTMENT on her face, she was dressed AS IF Carnival (WHOSE suit was referring to,(là, il faudrait remanier cette phrase …) was happening today ; hi MICKEY, I said ., Carnival is tomorrow.! 41....63

- In my office, so as to heal my wife's skin disease I was preparing an ointment, whose ingredients were expensive and hard to find, when my wife rang me as if the sky were falling on her head ; she had seen a mouse running in our messy kitchen ; I was so amazed to hear what she said that I deleted all the datas from my computer... 65.

- He put some OINTMENT on his hands, SO AS TO cure his CHAPPED HANDS: his phone RANG ; AMAZED and MESSY, he took his glasses off, AS IF he could imagine WHOSE voice he was answering to, when his MOUSE slipped and DELETED the chapter he was writing on his computer! 50.

- The gang of cowboys, each one as poor as a church MOUSE, succeeded in RINGING the MESSY herd of cattle WHOSE calves had to be branded, pushing them inside the corral, so quickly, SO AS TO deserve the outstanding prize the AMAZED boss had promised, but, as a fly in the OINTMENT, a tornado DELETED the program, sweeping away everything

Encore BRAVO!
(merci à mes relecteurs habituels ... Je sature ... )
