Ex 142/ I did it again
Message de here4u posté le 14-10-2018 à 13:41:03 (S | E | F)
Hello, Dear Friends!

Yes, I'm despaired, frustrated and FURIOUS again... Yesterday, I put the finishing touches to Exercise 142, saved it... and have done it again
I seem to have deleted the "final exercise", while erasing the "unnecessary incomplete versions". I must have stupidly kept a very incomplete one. I can neither find the right one on my computer nor on my backup flashdrive...
I've sent messages asking for HELP to my favourite and precious hotlines (my son and son-in-law) who happen to be far away at a family gathering I couldn't attend... (Quite pessimistic for a fast answer... Those they suggested by texts are no good... )
I hope they'll manage to find the whole thing... tonight. In the meantime, I'll try to remember the missing four sentences of N°1 but I know I've very scrupulously deleted my "different drafts" (including Maxwell's two sentences... ) as I stuck them on what was supposed to be "the final one"... Be patient, please... I might also do it over again... It will be quicker.
Please start with II) and III)...

I)Translate into English:

II)Translate into French:
Theirs was a model home, everyone acknowledged it, but – well – somehow he found it easier to be cheerful in other people’s homes than in his own. It was Grace’s fault. She wasn’t cheery and easy going. Something moody about her now. Moody. He had worn better than Grace, anyone could see that, and yet it was he who had had the hard time. All she had to do was stay at home and look after the home and the children. Nothing much in that. She always seemed to be working, but he couldn’t see what there was to do that could take her so long. Just a touch of woman’s perversity. It wasn’t that Grace had aged. Ten years married and with two children, there was still something girlish about her – raw, hard girlishness that had never mellowed. Grace was – Grace, for better or for worse. Maybe she’d be a bit brighter now. He could not help wondering how she had managed the five and three. If she could shower five and threes about like that, he’d been giving her too much for the housekeeping.
Marjorie BARNARD, The Lottery.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms you fancy but MUST remain verbs!), 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words, (you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, search your minds, think hard and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.
You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively! PLEASE, WHEN YOU WRITE YOUR SENTENCE, PUT CAPITALS TO THESE WORDS!

FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :

- (to) GRANT- (to) MANAGE – an OBSESSION – an ATTITUDE – APPROPRIATE – TINY – JUST AS (=1) – ACCORDING TO (= 1) - + un adjectif substantivé.
Of course, I give you THE FORCE... while you give me your BEST!
Go for it !

Stop casting doubt on my decisions. You both have concluded some sort of a truce but remember that he doesn't have your own interest in mind. To him what you may think only serves to keep him informed.

I can see what you have lost, believe me, that's true! I know that you won't be yourself any longer before long, insofar as you could ever will - One can't loose What has just been lost and remain the same guy- But you are her brother and she needs you.

thread my way out off the bedroom, tiptoe down the steps, refraining from flushing the toilet.

The CEO MANAGED the negotiations with the Union’s delegation JUST AS he's always done:
showing AN ATTITUDE of understanding towards the workers’ requests and worries;
GRANTING an APPROPRIATE readjustment of shifts’ time table;
giving a TINY rise in wages (though not expressly requested);
convincing the counterpart that AN OBSESSION of the company for a delocalization abroad was absolutely groundless .56

Thank you a lot and have a great week.
So long.

Ten years married and with two children, there was still something girlish about her ? raw, hard girlishness that had never mellowed. Grace was ? Grace, for better or for worse. Maybe she'd be a bit brighter now. He could not help wondering how she had managed the five and three. If she could shower five and threes about like that, he'd been giving her too much for the housekeeping.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
- (to) GRANT- (to) MANAGE ? an OBSESSION ? an ATTITUDE ? APPROPRIATE ? TINY ? JUST AS (=1) ? ACCORDING TO (= 1) - un adjectif substantivé. .
When I deal with a difficult problem I have never taken something for GRANTED , nevertheless I always keep a positive ATTITUDE ; ACCORDING TO the last knowledges my researches about the very TINY particles inside the world of THE LIVING need an APPROPRIATE approach and become very often a truly OBSESSION ,lately after many days of hard working I MANAGED to discover the best way to resolve the enigma , JUST AS I wanted it 67 words

Dear Here4u, thanks you very much for your new good exercise always done with a positive attitude

hello everyone,
this is my try. Ready to be corrected.

I)Translate into English:
Stop questioning my decisions. You and he have reached some kind of a truce, but remember that he has no interest in you in mind. For him, what you can think is only to inform him.

I do understand what you've lost, believe me, it's true ! I know you will be different of "yourself" for a long time, if ever you can....
We can't lose what you just lost and stay the same....
but you are her brother and she needs you !

Each morning, in order not to wake her , I slipped out of sheets, slowly, went on groping around in the dark, sneaking out of the room, went down steps on tiptoes, and avoided flushing the toilet.

For all practical purposes, I want to point out your pant is dirty. As nice as he is, I doubt you boy friend will clean it for you. It's okay, it's okay, don't stick your oar in.....don't stick your nose ! difficult to find THE good expression !!

Marjorie BARNARD, The Lottery.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
- (to) GRANT- (to) MANAGE – an OBSESSION – an ATTITUDE – APPROPRIATE – TINY – JUST AS (=1) – ACCORDING TO (= 1) - + un adjectif substantivé.

ACCORDING TO medicine , JUST AS it is difficult TO MANAGE our addictions, it is difficult with our OBSESSIONS, so we must adopt the good ATTITUDE to obtain TINY but APPROPRIATE results and GRANT us time for success. 37

tHANK YOU BOTH HERE4U and MAXWELL

Hello Here4U
Quite a very interesting exercise again! Thanks a lot ! I've had some hesitations, though: I hope you don't mind my asking

I)Translate into English:

"I understand what you've lost, believe me, I really do! I know you won't be you before long, if you will ever be able to... You can't lose what you've lost and remain the same... But you're her brother, and she needs you!"

Every morning, so as not to wake her up, I would carefully slip out of the sheets, grope my way through the darkness, sneak(*) out of the bedroom, tiptoe down the stairs and avoid flushing the toilet...

(trousers are)(thoughtful as he is)
For all intents and purposes, just to let you know, your trousers are dirty. As(**) thoughtful as he is, I doubt your boyfriend will wash them for you." "It's okay, don't stick your oar in."
(**) As peut-il être facultatif ici car sous-entendu?

III) Playing with words:

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below, 2 verbs, 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words.
FREEDOM! Voici les
éléments imposés cette fois :
(to) GRANT- (to) MANAGE – an OBSESSION – an ATTITUDE – APPROPRIATE – TINY – JUST AS (=1) – ACCORDING TO (= 1) -
un adjectif substantivé.

Nelly MANAGES to do everything, even if life sends to her TINY grains of sand : her behaviour is APPROPRIATE and positive,
ACCORDING to Bob's reports, JUST AS for THE DISABLED do, with her can-do ATTITUDE and always smiling whatever she
lives, Bob GRANTS it is an OBSESSION, a way of life. 51 words.

Have a very sweet week, each of you !
See you soon.

Hello, Dear friends,

Voici votre correction ...

I)Translate into English:

Stop second guessing my decision. You and him made some sort of truce, but remember he doesn’t have your best interest at heart. For him, whatever you’re thinking is purely informative.

- « mettre une décision en doute »= put in doubt/ cast doubt on/ stop questioning…/ stop second-guessing…/
- « Vous et lui »… You and he = formes sujets. Ceci est correct, formel (et peu employé à l’oral surtout !); la forme complément «you and him » est plutôt américaine ; cette forme n’est pas considérée comme étant correcte dans certains milieux britanniques, mais est cependant très fréquente …
- Best interest in mind/ best interest at heart/

I understand what you’ve lost, believe me, I do ! And I know you won’t be yourself for a while, if ever…
You can’t lose what you’ve just lost and be the same again… but you are her brother and she needs you.

=> you won’t be yourself again …
- « if ever » = if you could ever be yourself again.

Every morning, so as not to wake her up, I would slip out of bed gently, grope my way through darkness ; I would sneak out of the bedroom, tiptoe down the stairs, and avoid flushing the toilets…

- doucement = gently, softly, quietly, carefully
- avancer à tâtons : feel my way along/ grope my way along/ fumble my way along/
- se faufiler : Weave in/ out/ snake in/ out (comme un serpent) / slip out/ sneak out (idée de s’introduire, ou sortir de quelquepart EN SECRET, sans vouloir être vu/ entendu, mais pas forcément péjoratif. Dépend du contexte. )/
"tiptoed (manière) down the stairs (résultat)". Revoir leçons : 109971---110575--- et surtout 110815.

« In case it may be useful, I’m telling you that your pants are dirty. Thoutghtful though he is, I doubt your boyfriend will wash it for you… » « Enough ! Don’t stick your oar in/ Mind your own business… »

-« A toutes fins utiles » = in case that may be useful/ for whatever purpose it may serve/ for information.../ for future reference.../you may be interested to know.../ to whom it may concern.../you may wish to keep in mind that/ for all practical purposes/
- ton pantalon est …your trousers (BE)/ pants (US) ARE dirty… et n’oubliez pas d’accorder le pronom de reprise « … wash THEM for you… »
-= don’t stick your oar in/ don’t stick your two penn’worth in/ your tuppence-worth in/ stick your twopence worth in/ AE = don’t stick your two cents in/ two-cents’worth in/ show up/ show your face/

(1) « Theirs was a model home ».
(2) He had worn ; « worn » = preterite de « wear ».

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
(to) GRANT- (to) MANAGE – an OBSESSION – an ATTITUDE – APPROPRIATE – TINY – JUST AS (=1) – ACCORDING TO (= 1) - + un adjectif substantivé.

- JUST AS her search for an APPROPRIATE apartment was beginning to turn into an OBSESSION, she finally MANAGED to find a TINY one; she kept a positive ATTITUDE of mind, comparing her situation to that of all the HOMELESS who can't be GRANTED a loan ACCORDING TO banks' rules. (47)

- ACCORDING TO Le Monde, in 2011 an earthquake struck Fukushima, JUST AS a tsunami damaged the power plant, the Japanese ATTITUDE was admirable, APPROPRIATE to their Buddhist education; the police who MANAGED the situation never had the OBSESSION to repress the TINIEST looting and they GRANTED their support to THE SURVIVORS. (51)

- The CEO MANAGED the negotiations with the Union’s delegation JUST AS he had always done:
showing an understanding ATTITUDE towards the workers’ requests and worries;
GRANTING an APPROPRIATE readjustment of THE shifts’ time table;
giving a TINY rise in wages (though not expressly requested);
convincing the counterpart that an OBSESSION of the company for a delocalization abroad was absolutely groundless .(55)

- Dealing with a difficult problem I never take anything for GRANTED, though keeping a positive ATTITUDE ; yet, ACCORDING TO the latest knowledge my research about the very TINY particles inside the world of THE LIVING need an APPROPRIATE approach and often become an OBSESSION; lately after days of hard work I MANAGED to discover the solution to the enigma, JUST AS I wanted. (64)

- ACCORDING TO medicine, JUST AS it is difficult TO MANAGE our addictions, it is difficult with our OBSESSIONS, so we must adopt the good ATTITUDE to obtain TINY but APPROPRIATE results and GRANT us time for success. 37

- Nelly MANAGES to do everything, even if life sends her TINY grains of sand : her behaviour is APPROPRIATE and positive ; ACCORDING to Bob's reports, JUST AS what THE DISABLED do, with her can-do ATTITUDE , always smiling at living, Bob GRANTS it is an OBSESSION, a way of life. (49)
