Message de here4u posté le 30-12-2018 à 11:14:58 (S | E | F)
Hello, Dear Friends,

I)Translate into English:
Tu as raison, je n’ai aucun regret. »

4. Maxwell : "Il n'empêche, c'est à lui de le faire, pas à toi !" "Tu n'as pas l'impression d'enfoncer une porte ouverte, là ? Tu prêches un convaincu." "Tant mieux. Rends-lui donc la pareille."
Maxwell

II)Translate into French:
John Scaife hardly knew how it had come about. He knew only that he hated the books which were almost instruments of
torture to him, so keenly did he remember the humiliations of his school days. Once and once only had he dared to show
interest and that was because the book his son was reading seemed to be full of pictures.
« What’s that you’re looking at, son? »
« Nothing. »
« Well, it must be something. »
« It’s nothing to do with school. It’s from the library. » He stared at his father, defensively, « It’s about birds. »
« Birds!»
« Yes. » Briefly he showed a picture of some long-legged, white bird in flight. « That’s a heron. »
« Not a lot of use that, round here. »
Pat BORKER, Union Street;

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms
you fancy but MUST remain verbs!), 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words, (you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, search your minds, think hard and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.
You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively!
PLEASE, WHEN YOU WRITE YOUR SENTENCE, PUT CAPITALS TO THE GIVEN WORDS!
FREEDOM!
Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :
- (to) LOATHE – (to) DESPISE – a VIEW – a MURDERER – WHISPERING - BITTER – ALREADY – ACCORDING TO - + un équivalent modal au choix.
Of course, I give you THE FORCE... while you give me your BEST!
Go for it!

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: - (to) LOATHE – (to) DESPISE – a VIEW – a MURDERER – WHISPERING - BITTER – ALREADY – ACCORDING TO - + un équivalent modal au choix.

READY TO BE CORRECTED
You tell me that you LOATHE police novels and that, you DESPISE it , however ACCORDING TO my point of VIEW the last thriller of X…,which I have ALREADY read, has had neither insidious disapproval WHISPERING ,nor a BITTER criticism literary; most certainly (you should read this MURDER’s story = you’d better read this MURDER’s story

Your BITTER about this man is understandable, he is in front of you WHISPIRING shyly , but in reality , he is a MURDERER who LOATHES women ,he knocked them to death , the VIEW of the photos was unbearable, ACCORDING TO that you CAN DISPISE him and ALREADY convict him . (48 mots)

"The whole time that/when we were talking about all of it, I couldn’t see the faintest shred of remorse in your eyes!" "Come on, I am bored with all that stuff… and if I were to do it again, I would… You’re so right, I have no regrets."

She is… I mean used to be… incredible! I am not used to speaking of her in the past tense yet… The surgeon tried to save her live but ended up messing mine up.

In the nominal operating mode, the program runs in 7 hours. Given the catch-up for the two days missing and the server load, there are 9 chances out of 10 that I will not be able to give out the reporting before Thursday.

4. Maxwell : "Il n'empêche, c'est à lui de le faire, pas à toi !" "Tu n'as pas l'impression d'enfoncer une porte ouverte, là ? Tu prêches un convaincu." "Tant mieux. Rends-lui donc la pareille."

"It doesn’t change the fact (that) he is the one who’s been asked to do it, not you!" "Don’t you feel as though you’re whipping a dead horse now? You are preaching to the converted". "So much the better. Give him as good as you get."

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:

She said in a WHISPERING voice that ACCORDING TO their VIEW, the MURDERER, who had ALREADY killed 3 people during that BITTER night, LOATHED puppies and DESPISED women; accordingly, SHOULD your wife walk Bella at nightfall, have her back! 39

Notwithstanding a contrary VIEW of this Court, ACCORDING TO the rules in force, indeed to be DESPISED in this case, WE MUST DO IT, without even WHISPERING, and that’s enough ALREADY, though it will be a BITTER
decision, to release that LOATHED rapist and notorious MURDERER as well, because of a quibble: the lack of the embossed stamp on the conviction act. 58

"Bon, mais cela doit bien signifier quelque chose, non ? "
"cela n'a rien à voir avec mon école. Ce livre provient de la bibliothèque. »
" Ne présente aucune utilité ,pour nous ".

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
- (to) LOATHE ? (to) DESPISE ? a VIEW ? a MURDERER ? WHISPERING - BITTER ? ALREADY ? ACCORDING TO - un équivalent modal au choix.

Rustling and WHISPERING spread quickly through all over the room when the procuror held the floor and told the court : "ACCORDING TO my point of VIEW ,I confirm what I have ALREADY said , ,nobody CAN assert to become a MURDERER even if they LOATHE the society , DESPISE its members and lead a pitiable BITTER life. " 51 words

Dear Here4u , thanks a lot for your new interesting test

hello everyone, hello dear HERE4U,

This is my contribution to this first exercise 2019

READY TO BE CORRECTED.

I)Translate into English:
Tu as raison, je n’ai aucun regret. »
All the time we have spoken about this, I've never observed the smallest light of remorse in your eyes. !
Oh, I am fed up with all that... and if I had to do it again, I would ... You're right, I have no regrets.

She is.. She was amazing ! I am not used to talking of her in the past yet... The surgeon tried to save her life, but eventually upset mine.

In nominal mode, the program runs in 7 hours. Considering the catch-up of the two missing days and the server's workload, there is a nine-in-ten chance that I will not be able to distribute the report before Thursday...

4. Maxwell : "Il n'empêche, c'est à lui de le faire, pas à toi !" "Tu n'as pas l'impression d'enfoncer une porte ouverte, là ? Tu prêches un convaincu." "Tant mieux. Rends-lui donc la pareille."
Still, he must do it, not you!" "Don't you feel like you're kicking down an open door ? . You're preaching to a converted." "Good for you. Why don't you return the favor?"

II)Translate into French:

John Scaife hardly knew how it had come about. He knew only that he hated the books which were almost instruments of torture to him, so keenly did he remember the humiliations of his school days. Once and once only had he dared to show interest and that was because the book his son was reading seemed to be full of pictures.
Pat BORKER, Union Street;

« Ça ne sert pas à grand-chose, par ici. »

II) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:

Why becoming BITTER, life is ALREADY difficult, without need of LOATHING or DESPISING anything; in family, when we speak about writers, ACCORDING TO my father is in the room or not... 31 we must WHISPER, HE has a VIEW so MURDERING about books, believe me ! 44

THANKS A LOT, dear HEAR4U

Hello Here4U
What a contrast between this exercise and RYB in terms of difficulty. It was almost like a piece of cake. But always so interesting! Thanks a lot!!!

John Scaife hardly knew how it had come about. He knew only that he hated the books which were almost instruments of torture to him, so keenly did he remember the humiliations of his school days. « Not a lot of use that, round here. »

John Scaife savait à peine comment cela avait pu arriver. III) Playing with words:
In a BITTER voice, I said: "that WHISPERING girl has ALREADY confessed to be the MURDERER of her husband she DESPISPED openly; ACCORDING to her point of VIEW, when a woman LOATHES everything about her husband, she HAS TO dispose of him". (42)

Ex 147/new page, New Year, new hopes mardi 15 janvier 2019 Here4u 30-12-2018. FINISHED.

Hello my dear Here4u and Maxwell; thanks for the difficult new exercices.
Hi Everybody!

Here is my work:
I)Translate into English:
Tu as raison, je n’ai aucun regret. »
"All the while, when we were talking about all that, I haven't seen the slightest ruefulness gleam in your eyes! " "Oh, I'm fed up with all that... and if I have to do it again, I will...You're right, I regret nothing..."

She is... she was... incredible! I am not used to talking about her in the past yet... the surgeon tried to save her life, but ended up shattering mine...

In nominal mode, the program runs every seven hours. Given that adjustement of these two missing days, and workload of the server, there are a ninety per cent chances that I'm unable to broadcast the reporting before Thursday.

4. Maxwell : "Il n'empêche, c'est à lui de le faire, pas à toi !" "Tu n'as pas l'impression d'enfoncer une porte ouverte, là ? Tu prêches un convaincu." "Tant mieux. Rends-lui donc la pareille."
Maxwell
"Nevertheless, he is to do it, not you!" " Don't you fell labouring the point, here? You are preaching to the converted". "Fine! Get your own back on him."

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Here are THE 8 WORDS given below (2 verbs, 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words). 13 janvier 2019 tard
- (to) LOATHE – (to) DESPISE – a VIEW – a MURDERER – WHISPERING - BITTER – ALREADY – ACCORDING TO - + un équivalent modal au choix.

ACCORDING TO the Police's VIEW, despite appearance and WHISPERING, if John DESPISES books to the point that BITTER, he LOATHES them, the MURDERER was ALREADY taller and stronger than John, and would HAVE TO be another one. 38 words.

Of course, I give you THE FORCE... while you give me your BEST! I've tried to give my best, once again... but it was not really easy (the first exercise... !!!) : Just in time, I hope not to be late..., and everything is done !
Here is the force back to you, my dear Here4u, for marking... !

Have a sweet week !
See you soon.

Hello ! Magie,

Hello, dear hard workers!

NON !

I)Translate into English:
Tu as raison, je n’ai aucun regret. »

« The whole time we’ve been talking about all of this, I haven’t seen one single glimmer of remorse from you... » « I’m done with all that... if I had to do it all over again, I would. I have zero regret. »

- « je n’ai pas vu » = bilan d’une action => present perfect=> I haven’t seen.
- « lueur » = glint/ glow/ gleam/ glimmer/ ( a glimmer of hope)
- « j’en ai assez de ça … »= I’m fed up with it/ I’ve had enough of it/ I’m done with that...

She is... she was... amazing... I’m still not used to speaking about her in the past tense. The surgeon tried to save her life and finally ended up turning mine upside down.

- incroyable = incredible/ amazing/ unbelievable/
- avoir l’habitude de parler = to be used to + ING.
- finir par = to end up doing something
- bouleverser = ici= to disrupt/ to to wreak havoc/ to turn upside down/

In nominal mode, the program is running in seven hours. Considering we have to make up for/ catch up for the two days’ delay and the server load, chances are nine out of ten that I won't be able to send the report before Thursday.

Encore une fois, il fallait un present en – ing. ;
- compte tenu de = étant donné = given (that)/ considering/ seeing (that)/ taking into account that/
- rattraper = to catch up/ make up for/ the two days’ delay (en utilisant un génitif temporel) ;
- des deux journées manquantes : the two missing days/
- neuf sur dix= nine out of ten/ etc. 5 out of twenty

4. Maxwell : "Il n'empêche, c'est à lui de le faire, pas à toi !" "Tu n'as pas l'impression d'enfoncer une porte ouverte, là ? Tu prêches un convaincu." "Tant mieux. Rends-lui donc la pareille."

«Nevertheless, he was asked to do it, you weren’t ! » « Don't you think you're stating the obvious, here? You are preaching to the choir. » «Good! Get your own back on him!»

- Il n'empêche= be that as it may/ however/ nevertheless/ nonetheless
- Noubliez pas d’accentuer "he" and "you" (italiques ou soulignement à l’écrit, accent tonique à l’oral).
- « enfoncer une porte ouverte » : to labour the point/ state the obvious/ tilt at windmills/
- prêcher un convaincu = plutôt : prêcher à un converti : preach to the converted/ preach to the choir/
- rendre la pareille : return the favour/ get your own back on/ give as good as you get/ pay back/ repay/ give a taste of your own medicine

II)Translate into French:

John Scaife hardly knew how it had come about (1). He knew only that he hated the books which were almost (2) instruments of torture to him, so keenly did he remember (3) the humiliations of his school days. Once and once only had he dared to show (4) interest and that was because the book his son was reading seemed to be full of pictures (5).
« What’s that you’re looking at, son?»
« Nothing. »
« Well, it must be something.»
« It’s nothing (6) to do with school. It’s from the library. » He stared at his father, defensively, « It’s about birds. »
« Birds! »
« Yes. » Briefly he showed a picture of some long-legged, white bird in flight. (7) « That’s a heron. »
« Not a lot of use that, round here. »

« Ca ne te servira à rien ici ! »
Pat BORKER, Union Street;

(2) … they were almost instruments of torture …
(6) It’s nothing to do = it HAS nothing to do= ça n’a rien à voir.
(7) white bird in flight…

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: - (to) LOATHE – (to) DESPISE – a VIEW – a MURDERER – WHISPERING - BITTER – ALREADY – ACCORDING TO - + un équivalent modal au choix.

- You tell him that you LOATHE detective novels and that, you DESPISE them, however ACCORDING TO his point of VIEW * the last thriller by X…, which he has ALREADY read, received neither insidious disapproval WHISPERING,(boff) nor a BITTER literary criticism; you should really read this MURDER story.

- Your BITTER reaction to this man is understandable; he is in front of you WHISPERING shily, but in reality, he is a MURDERER who LOATHES women, beating them to death; the VIEW of the photos was unbearable ACCORDING TO what was said ; you CAN DESPISE him and ALREADY convict him. (48) (il fallait un équivalent … pas le modal !)

- She said in a WHISPERING voice that ACCORDING TO their VIEW, the MURDERER who had ALREADY killed 3 people during that BITTER night, LOATHED puppies and DESPISED women; accordingly, SHOULD your wife walk Bella at nightfall, have her back! 39 (il fallait un équivalent … pas le modal !)

- Notwithstanding a contrary VIEW of this Court, ACCORDING TO the rules in force, indeed to be DESPISED in this case, WE MUST DO IT, without even WHISPERING, and that’s enough ALREADY, though it will be a BITTER decision, to release that LOATHED rapist and notorious MURDERER as well, because of a quibble: the lack of the embossed stamp on the conviction act. (58) (il fallait un équivalent … pas le modal !)

- In a BITTER voice, I said: "that WHISPERING girl has ALREADY confessed to be the MURDERER of her husband she DESPISPED openly; ACCORDING to her point of VIEW, when a woman LOATHES everything about her husband, she HAS TO dispose of him". (42)

- Rustling and WHISPERING spread quickly through the room when the DA held the floor and told the court: "ACCORDING TO the councel’s point of VIEW, I confirm what I have ALREADY said: nobody CAN assert become a MURDERER even if they LOATHE the society, DESPISE its members and lead a pitiable BITTER life. " 51 (il fallait un équivalent … pas le modal !)

- Why become BITTER, life is ALREADY difficult, without THE need of LOATHING or DESPISING anybody; in a family, when we speak about writers, ACCORDING TO my father, we must WHISPER, HE has a VIEW to MURDERING people about books, believe me ! 44 (il fallait un équivalent … pas le modal !)

- ACCORDING TO the Police's VIEW, despite appearance and WHISPERING, if John DESPISES books to the point that being BITTER, he LOATHES them, the MURDERER was ALREADY taller and stronger than John, and would HAVE TO be someone else. 38 words.

Merci à tous de ce bon travail ... Le suivant vous attend déjà !
