Ex 149/ easier, this time
Message de here4u posté le 28-01-2019 à 22:05:52 (S | E | F)
Hello Dear Friends,

Pick and Choose...
Pour vous aider, souvenez-vous que THE FORCE IS WITH YOU…

I)Translate into English:
Paye, toi, puisque tu es plein aux as !" "Moins fort !

Merci Maxwell …

II)Translate into French:

… She dialled her number.
Her mother’s voice. Flat. At the sound of it affection filled Alice, and she thought, I’ll ask if she wants me to do some shopping for her on the way.
«Hello, Mum, this is Alice.»
Silence.
«It’s Alice.»
A pause. «What do you want?» The flat voice, toneless.
Alice, all warm need to overcome obstacles on behalf of everyone, said, «Mum, I want to talk to you. You see, there’s this house. I could get the Council to let us stay on a controlled squat basis, you know, like Manchester? But we need someone to guarantee the electricity and gas.»
She heard a mutter, inaudible, then the line went dead.

Dorris LESSING, The Good Terrorist.

III) OPTIONAL : «She heard a mutter, inaudible»: imagine what Alice’s mother muttered… (60 words at most…)

IV) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms you fancy but MUST remain verbs!), 2 adjectives (or adverbs), 2 nouns and 2 link words, (you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, search your minds, think hard and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.
You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively! PLEASE, WHEN YOU WRITE YOUR SENTENCE, PUT CAPITALS TO THESE WORDS!
FREEDOM!
Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :
- (To) OVERCOME – (to) INVITE - a HOSPITAL – a BILL – RADIANT – ASHAMED – DESPITE – SO THAT - + un tag reprenant un impératif.
Of course, I give you THE FORCE... while you give me your BEST!
Go for it!

Hello there.
I’ve never been more joyful to do 'my' homework. What a great accomplishment you did. Way to go!

READY FOR CORRECTION

I)Translate into English:

« No matter how hard/much I try, I can’t get over him/put him out of my mind… » (get over pourrait être perçu comme de la sur-traduction)

Through a slit in the door, he could see his father standing, between two men wearing derbies and belted raincoats. They were strangers to him.

It’s not working again : you played that card last time. Eat the fruit which has been served to you, first.

Paye, toi, puisque tu es plein aux as !" "Moins fort !
I have no money on me. You should pay since you’re filthy rich/made of money. Keep your voice down! Do you want to cut everyone in or what?

"Her mother’s voice. Flat." "The flat voice, toneless." ?

III) OPTIONAL : «She heard a mutter, inaudible»: imagine what Alice’s mother muttered… (60 words at most…) It reminds me somewhat of what I was doing at school a few years ago.

I cannot believe my ears! I could kick myself for not bringing you up properly. Why the hell would I inflect this on myself? You’re a disgrace to our family. Go back to your rat hole, together with your degenerate punk bunch, and stay out of my life. Don’t you know I already have plenty on my mind… 60

IV) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:

DESPITE his RADIANT wife is OVERCOMING her illness in HOSPITAL, he isn’t ASHAMED of INVITING prostitutes at home SO THAT he can fool around for some BILLS ; but don’t judge him, WILL you? 35

-I did (sth) so that I can do = référence présent ou future selon contexte, non ?

silence
- c'est Alice ;

III) OPTIONAL : «She heard a mutter, inaudible»: imagine what Alice’s mother muttered… (60 words at most…)

- my poor girl, you are dreaming, ..... And after having hanged up, she said to herself :
she is again in the clouds, poor Alice, in spite of her age, she's still naive, 32 , but, really, how could she imagine we could live in a squat ? it's not because we are poor than we don't have dignity, respect of ourselves. 26 = 58

IV) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:

How ASHAMED he was, after having drank too much, and DESPITE he said he has no money to pay the BILL, he HAS finished at HOSPITAL but his friend Peter, too happy TO INVITE him at his wedding, decided with a RADIANT smile that he can OVERCOME the difficulty, and advance the money, SO THAT he can get out....., but please, don't drink so much, do you !

THANK YOU HERE4U again, for your correction.

Hello Here4u,

I – Into English

1 – Even if I try very hard, I can’t get her out of my head
2 – Through a slit in the door, he could see his father standing between two men wearing bowlers and belted raincoats and whom he didn’t know
3 – That doesn’t work with me : you took me in last time. Eat the fruit you’ve been served first
4 – I’ve not got any money on me. You pay, you wealthy guy ! Lower your voice ! Do you want anyone to cut in ?

II – Into French

She dialled her number. Her mother’s voice. Flat. At the sound of it, affection filled Alice and she thought I’ll ask if she wants me to do some shopping for her on the way. “Hello, Mum, this is Alice” Silence. “It’s Alice” A pause “What do you want ?” the flat voice, toneless. Alice, all warm need to overcome obstacles on behalf of everyone, said “Mum, I want to talk to you. You see, there is this house I could get the council to let us stay on a controlled squat basis, you know, like Manchester ? But we need someone to guarantee the electricity and gas.” She heard a mutter, inaudible, then the line went dead.
Elle composa le numéro. La voix de sa mère. Plate.

III – Optional :

If you imagine I feel like going back in such a grotty place as in Manchester you’re kidding me. Here I am and here I’ll stay and don’t bother to come and visit me anymore I’d rather stay alone

IV – Playing with words

He INVITED her and she accepted ; looking RADIANT, he left the HOSPITAL and took his visa SO THAT he may foot the BILL in a good restaurant, but DESPITE his confidence, he was a bit ASHAMED of his poor clothes but he’ll OVERCOME that when she arrives, WON’T HE ?

Tu so much -

hello Here4U
Indeed, that was easier, and shorter but as pleasant as usual. The optional exercise was the easiest one (Yet, I can hardly imagine the mother saying more than twenty words muttering... )

I)Translate into English:
Even if I try very hard, I can't get it out of my head...
Through a crack in the door, he was looking at his father standing between two bowler-hatted belted raincoated men. They were total strangers to him.
I'm not buying that: you played that card last time. Eat the fruit you've been served first.
4. "Je n'ai pas d'argent sur moi. Paye, toi, puisque tu es plein aux as !" "Moins fort !
"I have no money on me. Pay for it, you, as you are filthy rich!" "Not so loud! Do you want everyone to hear or something?

II) Translate into French:
... She dialled her number.
Her mother's voice. Flat. At the sound of it affection filled Alice, and she thought, I'll ask if she wants me to do some shopping for her on the way.
«Hello, Mum, this is Alice.»
Silence.
«It's Alice.»
A pause. «What do you want?» The flat voice, toneless.
Alice, all warm need to overcome obstacles on behalf of everyone, said, «Mum, I want to talk to you. You see, there's this house. I could get the Council to let us stay on a controlled squat basis, you know, like Manchester? But we need someone to guarantee the electricity and gas.»

Dorris LESSING, The Good Terrorist.

... Elle composa son numéro. La voix de sa mère. Atone.

III) Imagine what Alice's mother muttered:
Yeah, sure! She only remembers her mum when she needs money or a favour. You can go whistle for it(*)! (20)
(*) or: You've got a hope!

IV) Playing with words:
DESPITE her working long hours in the HOSPITAL, I'd INVITED her SO THAT I could OVERCOME my shyness which I was ASHAMED of, and with a RADIANT smile, I grabbed the BILL saying: "It's on me, don't touch it, WILL YOU?" (44)

Hello my dear Here4u and Maxwell : thanks to you for your exercises !
Hi Everybody!

Here is my work:
I)Translate into English:
« Even if I try very hard, I can't go her out of my head... » Une personne...
or « Even if I try very hard, I can't go it out it of my head. » Une chose, une idée...

Through a crack in the door, he could see his father standing, between the two bowlered and belted raincoat men. They were strangers for him.

« That isn't sucessful : you plaid a dirty trick to me the last time. First, eat the fruit you've been served.

Paye, toi, puisque tu es plein aux as ! » « Moins fort ! »
« I've got no money left. You DO pay, as you are filthy rich ! » « Keep your voice down! You want the whole people take advantage of me or what ?

II)Translate into French:
… She dialled her number.
Her mother’s voice. Flat. At the sound of it affection filled Alice, and she thought, I’ll ask if she wants me to do some shopping for her on the way.

Dorris LESSING, The Good Terrorist.

… Elle composa son numéro.
La voix de sa mère. Monotone.

Dorris LESSING, The Good Terrorist. « La Bonne Terroriste. »

III) OPTIONAL : «She heard a mutter, inaudible»: imagine what Alice’s mother muttered… (60 words at most…)
"Mind your own business! Let me alone, I don't want to speak with you about all that!" 18 words.

IV) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below : 2 verbs, 2 adjectives (or adverbs), 2 nouns and 2 link words, and the suitable punctuation, search your minds, think hard and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE. - de 65 mots. 11 février 2019 tard.
Go for it!
At the HOSPITAL, Mary felt ASHAMED when she was INVITED to change her baby : she was OVERCOME by emotion, DESPITE her clumsiness, then she became RADIANT when the doctor told her that the baby was clean BILL of heatlth, SO THAT they go home tomorrow, WILL THEY ? 47 words.

See you soon.
Have a very sweet Week!

Hello, Dear workers,

Voici votre correction ...

I)Translate into English:

No matter how hard I try, I can’t get her off my mind.

- Même si = even if/ even though/, bien sûr … However + adjectif/ No matter how + adj » « However hard I try... »
- sortir de la tête = sortir de l’esprit = get off/ out of my mind.
-« ça m’est sorti de la tête… » = it slipped my mind.

Through a crack in the door he could see his father standing, between two men in bowler hats and belted raincoats. They were strangers to him.

= a stranger (« in the night »…)

I’m not buying that! You played that trick on me last time… First, eat the fruit you’ve been served.

- Ça ne prend pas ! = I’m not buying it !/
- tu m'as fait le coup ; Faire le coup = pull that stunt on me/ played that trick on me/ pull that trick on me/ you made me the bang/ You’ve already got me with that!/ fool sby
- la dernière fois = last time ; Leçon N° 106900

Paye, toi, puisque tu es plein aux as !" "Moins fort !
«I have no money on me. You pay, since you’re loaded!» «Keep your voice down… Do you want everyone to hear?»

- "Etre plein aux as" : to be filthy rich/ in the money/ made of money/ minted/ loaded/ stinking rich/ to be a moneybag/ rolling in it/
- « Moins fort »= Not so loud/ Keep your voice down! / keep it down!/
- En faire profiter tout le monde : to share it with everyone/ everyone to enjoy/ everyone to hear/

II)Translate into French:

… She dialled her number.
Her mother’s voice. Flat. At the sound of it affection filled Alice, and she thought, I’ll ask if she wants me to do some shopping for her on the way.
« Hello, Mum, this is Alice. »
Silence.
« It’s Alice. »
A pause. « What do you want ? » The flat voice, toneless.
Alice, all warm need to overcome obstacles on behalf of everyone, said, « Mum, I want to talk to you. You see, there’s this house. I could get the Council to let us stay on a controlled squat basis, you know, like Manchester ? But we need someone to guarantee the electricity and gas. »
She heard a mutter, inaudible, then the line went dead.

Dorris LESSING, The Good Terrorist.

Elle composa son numéro.
La voix de sa mère. Monocorde.

-The Council= Conseil/ conseil municipal, bien sûr ….
- to mutter = to talk indistinctly

PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :
- (To) OVERCOME – (to) INVITE - a HOSPITAL – a BILL – RADIANT – ASHAMED – DESPITE – SO THAT - + un tag reprenant un impératif.

- DESPITE her working long hours in the HOSPITAL, I'd INVITED her SO THAT I could OVERCOME my shyness which I was ASHAMED of, and with a RADIANT smile, I grabbed the BILL saying: "It's on me, don't touch it, WILL YOU?" (44)

- SO THAT he should know if he was cured, this man was in HOSPITAL; a man who fits the BILL as a doctor INVITED him to enter the consulting-room and told him “OVERCOME your anxiety, be RADIANT, WILL YOU ; « DESPITE your cold, everything is fine; the man, ASHAMED, because of his previous panic went out precipitously… »

- A clean BILL of health has arrived and a RADIANT sun seems TO INVITE out into the park, DESPITE the chilly weather, and OVERCOME the anxiety felt by the veteran, ASHAMED, who had fallen in love with A HOSPITAL nurse, the one pushing his wheelchair, SO THAT he thought: "I MUST ask her to marry me!"

- Last month, SO THAT I could follow a new treatment in HOSPITAL I was INVITED for AN exam; OVERCOME by the fear of having an incurable disease, I'm not ASHAMED to say I was very RADIANT when the doctor, DESPITE poor results, gave me a clean BILL of health and told me "Keep confidence in yourself, WILL YOU?". 54 words

- How ASHAMED he was, after drinking too much, and DESPITE THOUGH he said he had no money to pay the BILL, he HAD finished in HOSPITAL but his friend Peter, with a RADIANT smile, too happy TO INVITE him at his wedding, decided that he COULD OVERCOME the difficulty, and advance the money, SO THAT he could get out..., but please, don't drink so much, will you?!

- At the HOSPITAL, Mary felt ASHAMED when she was INVITED to change her baby: she was OVERCOME by emotion, DESPITE her clumsiness, then she became RADIANT when the doctor told her that the baby had a clean BILL of health, SO THAT she thought: "let’s go home tomorrow, SHALL WE?" 47.
Oups, j'avais oublié de recopier celle-ci ... Désolée !

- DESPITE= ALTHOUGH his RADIANT wife is OVERCOMING her illness in HOSPITAL, he isn’t ASHAMED of INVITING prostitutes at home SO THAT he can fool around (for? with? some BILLS ; but don’t judge him, WILL you? 35
