Message de here4u posté le 15-08-2021 à 22:11:08 (S | E | F)
Hello, dear co-workers,

I) Translate into French:

His name is in there on the first page, along with the names of his friends. I close my eyes and hold on to the sink. Then I rake my arms across the drainboard and send the dishes to the floor.
He doesn’t move… I know he’s heard. He lifts his head as if still listening. But he doesn’t move otherwise. He doesn’t turn around.
He and Gordon Johnson and Mel Dorn and Vern Williams, they play poker and bowl and fish. They fish every spring and early summer before visiting relatives can get in the way. They are decent men, family men, men who take care of their jobs. They have sons and daughters who go to school with our son, Dean.
Last Friday these family men left for the Naches River. They parked the car in the mountains and hiked to where they wanted to fish. They carried their bedrolls, their food, their playing cards, their whiskey.
They saw the girl before they set up camp. Mel Dorn found her. No clothes on her at all. She was wedged into some branches that stuck out over the water.
He called the others and they came to look. They talked about what to do. One of the men – my Stuart didn’t say which – said they should start back at once. The others stirred the sand with their shoes, said they didn’t feel inclined that way. They pleaded fatigue, the late hour, the fact that the girl wasn’t going anywhere.
In the end they went ahead and set up the camp. They built a fire and drank their whiskey. When the moon came up, they talked about the girl. Someone said they should keep the body from drifting away. They took their flashlights and went back to the river.

Mel Dorn l'a trouva.

II) Optional expression: "Peer pressure"*: what’s your opinion about the influence of a group on individuals? (130 words)
A person in a group will indulge in performing certain acts that she would never have dared or even thought to do alone.
Unless she has enough strength of character to assert her opinion, she will be influenced by the group, often according to the own will of a single leader.
Group boosts energy, gives impetus and eliminates fears
A better performance will make by a great sportman if a big fan-club follows him.
In theater, some people are paid to applaud, all it is some clapping of hands and all the whole room starts.
Socially organised humans groups are capable of the best and the worst
They can join forces in defence or protection association, to change the traditions but also push crime, denunciation, destroy.(127)

Hello Here4U
That's funny how far I was with my story They seem totally innocent. Or will there be a twist in the end?
Thanks a lot!

Raymond CARVER, Short Cuts.

II) Optional expression: "Peer pressure"*: what’s your opinion about the influence of a group on individuals? (130 words)

Undoubtedly, some people are a bad influence. If you don't know how to spot them beforehand, you may get involved in a group that might pressure you into doing unpleasant things later. And you, too nice for your own good, you don't dare to say no, not to be rejected by the group.
Some sects can even push you to suicide. They can be so persuasive!
I acknowledge it's easy to say, but you have to be very careful, keep a cool head and put things into perspective when you are urged to do something that isn't right. In some cases, leaving the group for good would definitely be better... if not too late... (118 W)

Hello, dearest workers!

Mel Dorn l’a trouvée.

II) Optional expression: Peer pressure : what’s your opinion about the influence of a group on individuals? (130 words)
