Can everyone explain to me why the t of often isn't always pronounced? Is it because of a local pronunciation ?

Good evening,Pour avoir vécu en Angleterre et me balader un peu partout en GB,of(t)en(t muet) est le plus pratiqué . Viennent les gens "chics "Oxford ,Cambridge..qui ont un niveau de langue particulièrement tenu :ils disent "ofTen".Et,enfin, dans certaines régions ou pays (Ecosse,pays de Galles Dublin.)le "t" est prononcé (dans un certain "milieu" encore).. Voilà ce que je peux dire.good luck !

Marie, the proposal for English spelling reform is ridiculous. English is not Spanish. And certainly nobody will ever accept "Q" to represent the sound of "ng".
By the way, the T of "often" is optionally pronounced in America as well.
