Bonjour, j'aimerais savoir si ma phrase est approprié à ce que je veux;
"My favorite subjects are English, French and Maths;against by, I hate art and science."
le mot en gras, against by, qui veut dire par contre
Mais j'hésite entre ce mot et on the contrary...

Salut à toi,
Déjà si tu traduis "par contre" mot par mot en anglai ça donnerait : "by gainst" sauf que "against" ne sert pas vraiment à ça, against c'est plus dans le sens "être contre" comme dans "Rage against the police" par exemple (Rage CONTRE/ENVERS la police).
Dans ton cas j'utiliserai l'expression "In one hand/In the other hand" qui signifie "D'un côté/D'un autre côté; par contre".
Cherche "contre" dans un dico fr->ang et tu verras que l'expression "par contre" est traduie de cette façon.
Pour ta phrase ça donne : "In one hand my favorite subjects are English, French and Maths; in the other hand I hate art and science."
ou simplement un bon vieux "mais" : "My favorite subjects are English, French and Maths, but I hate art and science."

Pourquoi ne pas écrire tout simplement "but"? On m'a toujours enseignée que le meilleur des styles est le plus simple.. Bon courage.

Je suis d'accord avec INGA. "On the other hand" est la bonne traduction.

Yes, Inga's English is very good. You can also use "whereas". Teachers like you to use these expressions for opinions.
And yes, Inga is right - On the one hand/On the other hand (to give two sides to the story).
These "tool words" as I call them are so handy (utile).
