Thème/rencontre inattendue

Bonsoir,
Pourriez-vous m'aider à corriger ce qui ne va pas dans mon thème ? Je mets le texte en français :
Une rencontre inattendue
Quand je le vis sur le pas d'une porte, j'eus du mal à le reconnaître. Carmine, à califourchon sur une chaise, son chapeau rejeté en arrière, obstruait le trottoir. Il fumait. Vraiment, on ne s'attendait pas à le rencontrer là. J'allais m'en étonner mais lui, sans me laisser le temps de parler, me demanda: "Que faîtes-vous ici ? Il ya longtemps qu'on ne s'est pas vus." Je me mis à lui expliquer. Je lui racontai notre enquête et pourquoi je me trouvais à Mulberry Street. "Et votre amie ?" me demanda-t-il. "Elle me rejoindra ce soir. J'avais envie d'être seule. Enfin, de passer une journée ici." Quant à lui, il me dit que c'était par hasard qu'il était assis là, dans un costume noir. "Ca ne m'est jamais arrivé. Jamais..."
An unforeseen meeting
When I saw him on the doorstep, I had difficulty in recognizing him. Carmine, astride on a chair was blocking the pavement, his hat tossed behind. He was smoking. We really were not expecting meeting him here.I was about to show my surprise
but without giving me time to utter a word , he asked to me : What are you doing here ? We havent seen each other for a long time. I’m going to explain it. I started explaining our inquiry and the the reson for why I found myself
in Mulberry Street. “And your friend ?” he asked to me “She will meet me tonight. I felt like being alone. Well, to spend a day here.” As for him, he told me it was by chance he was sitting here in a black suit. “That has never happened to me.
Never...”

Je vais faire celle qui insiste, mais ne pourriez-vous pas être juste un peu plus précise ??
Pourquoi "on" ne va pas ? pourquoi "and" ne va pas ?

I had difficulty
astride
( his hat tossed behind.) ──► with his hat tilted(inciné, penché) back
En revanche,« When I saw him on the doorstep » est tout à fait correct
