Bac/Spaces and Exchanges
Message de adelfoot posté le 17-05-2014 à 20:03:44 (S | E | F)
Bonjour !
Bonne lecture
Merci pour vos réponses.

Hello ! I'm going to talk about spaces and exchanges. First of all, I would like to give a definition of this notion : this notion deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all societies occupy and the interactions between them, which are the exchanges. Space and exchange are linked and interact each other. Are geographic spaces the only places for exchanges ?
Firstly, we're going to talk about the geographical spaces with exchanges of people, the immigration ; and secondly we're going to see an other kind of spaces, the virtual spaces with exchanges of information.

I/ The geographic spaces (with flow of people)
The extract we studied, from The Bat which is a thriller written by Jo Nesbo, deals with two characters, Robin Toowoomba and Andrew Kensington, who belong to the Stolen Generation : aboriginal children who are removed from their families, for integrating them to Australian society. The action takes place in Australia. Toowoomba was given the name of his native village, in fact Toowoomba is the name of a village in Queensland. We can guess that he have been raised in a home, without a family. So there was an exchange between the village (the space) and him (his identity). The name Kengsinton sounds English. We can infer that he was adopted by an Australian family, unlike Toowoomba. So there was an exchange between this man and a different culture, that is to say the culture of white people. In this extract, indeed to communicate, Toowoomba and Harry Hole, the main character which is Norvegian, use English. We can say that there is no bareer between them : coming from different spaces, different cultures (a Norvegian and an aborigenal Australian) do not prevent them from communicating. So spaces intervene on exchanges but space is not the limit as we have noticed here.

II/ An other kind of space : the virtual spaces (exchanges of information)
More than a simple tool, internet becomes a virtual world. Internet allow us to send messages, to speak with someone, to research and share some informations. So in this space, there is an exchange of informations, and an exchange of data between people, through websites like social networks or newspapers' sites. Through two documents, called Job seekers getting asked for Facebook passwords and Children with internet access at home gain exam advantage, charity says, we have seen that although the internet represents a plus for anybody who wants to carry on with research, we can say that it is also the risk of an intrusion in our private life. New technologies could even provide governments with the means of spying on citizens.

To conclude, the georaphic spaces are not the only places for exchanges. In fact we have seen different kinds of exchanges : exchanges between a culture, a space and identity, between two people who don't have the same traditions, for the geographical spaces ; and exchanges of informations for the virtual spaces. In my point of view, internet is a very good technology, we can't do without it today, but it mustn't replace totally the real spaces in the communication between people.
